Well I got an ipod for christmas (yea I kno, took me long enough, right?) Smiley and I want to be able to use it in conjunction with my stereo in the Xterra. I've done some researching and it seems an FM transmitter is a fairly common solution to the problem but isn't always the best sound quality;

So I've decided I'm gonna start looking at getting a new headunit, probably a single din since they're cheaper.

Installing them seems pretty straight forward from what I've seen from this write-up
http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2986&highlight=Stereo+Install

I also plan on getting something like this

I don't know much about headunits though so I'm open to any suggestions from you guys

Two ways to go at it...

Aux In and Ipod interface

Aux In - Just a normal auxiliary in, some units have it in the front which is nice. Anything with a headphone jack can be plugged in (GPS, etc.) Doesn't charge the IPOD though. $8 for the wire, your done.

Ipod Interface - This allows you to control your IPOD selection within the deck itself. Some decks are 'ipod ready' but they require you to purchase an attachment in order for it to work (a box.) Beauty of Alpine is it's just a wire, so it's far cheaper. The wire can be re-routed to your glove compartment so it can remain hidden. Can charge IPOD. $50 box vs $25 Alpine wire? Take your pick.

I've always been a fan of Alpine for other reasons than the IPOD attachment - But every brand produces a good deck in their lineup.

Saw this one at Best Buy today

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Pioneer+-+50W+x+4+MOSFET+CD+In-Dash+Deck/9197148.p?id=1218056226311&skuId=9197148

it's got an aux in and is pretty decently priced.

I've been lookin' at Crutchfield.com too cuz with some headunits, they include the the mounting hardware and all that stuff along with free shipping

I've always used Alpine headunits b/c there ipod control are all through the headunit.. I think pioneer is too, but you have to buy an extra adapter for it. I've used the FM transmitor, and personally I think there a waist of $$ with the quality of music you get. always serching for a station that doesnt have static and having to use the ipod itself to change tracks gets old too. I like being able to control it through the headunit

Head unit= good
Transmitter= one more thing to flop around, burn up fuses, fly across the car when taking a tight turn, channel surfing pain in the butt!

Just found this a little bit ago

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_16495_Pioneer+DEH-1100MP.html

mounting brackets and wiring harness are included for a price cheaper than just the head unit from bestbuy. I ordered the mount/charger in the first post and it comes with a 3.5mm aux cable needed to use the ipod with it.

there's also this one a guy on the Xterra forums recommended.. has ipod interface controls. it won't work with the charger/mount though; but I guess if the ipod was displayed on the head units screen I wouldn't need the mount. hmm

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_17269_Kenwood+KDC-MP342U.html

EDIT: damn, just found this one as well lol. it's out of stock at the moment though http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_15104_Sony+CDX-GT62IPW.html

EDIT 2: looks like this one ^^ has been discontinued

I personally own an apline with the ipod interface, I can tell you know that extra cable is 40 bucks and it works like a champ. charges the ipod and also everything is done through the headunit in terms of playlist selection but the best purchase I've every made. I have actually brought 3 of the same units I have and they are in different vehicles
